IMU CET 2027: eligibility, exam pattern, age limit and seats
A planning guide to the Indian Maritime University Common Entrance Test for marine engineering, nautical science and maritime management admissions.
Overview
| Exam | Indian Maritime University Common Entrance Test (IMU CET) |
|---|---|
| Conducted by | Indian Maritime University (IMU), a Central University |
| Level | University-level entrance examination |
| Courses | B.Tech, B.Sc, DNS and other notified programmes |
| Mode | Computer-based test, where notified |
| Admission year | 2027–28 |
| Official website | imu.edu.in |
Eligibility
Eligibility depends on the programme. For popular undergraduate options like B.Tech Marine Engineering and B.Sc Nautical Science, students generally need Class 12 (10+2) from a recognised board with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, plus a minimum in English — and to meet the aggregate PCM mark prescribed in that year's prospectus.
| B.Tech Marine Engineering | PCM; typically ~60% aggregate, English ~50% (verify for 2027) |
|---|---|
| B.Sc Nautical Science | PCM; typically ~60% aggregate, English ~50% (verify for 2027) |
| DNS | PCM; typically ~60% aggregate, English ~50% (verify for 2027) |
Other courses can have different subject, degree or minimum-mark requirements, and seafaring programmes carry medical fitness and eyesight standards worth checking early.
Age limit
Age eligibility is programme- and category-specific rather than a single number across every course. Before applying, check the official notification for the minimum and maximum age, the date used to calculate it, and any category relaxations.
Number of attempts
IMU CET isn't run like an exam with a fixed lifetime attempt cap — eligibility is assessed fresh each admission cycle, so a candidate can apply again in a later year if they still meet that year's academic, age and medical requirements.
Exam pattern
In recent cycles, the UG CET (other than BBA) has been a computer-based test of 200 multiple-choice questions across 3 hours. The 2027 notification will confirm the final structure, duration and marking scheme.
| Physics | Class 11–12 concepts, formulas and numerical problems |
|---|---|
| Chemistry | Physical, Organic and Inorganic Chemistry |
| Mathematics | Algebra, Calculus, Trigonometry and other prescribed topics |
| English | Grammar, vocabulary and comprehension |
| General Aptitude | Logical reasoning and quantitative aptitude |
Seats
Total seats depend on the course, campus, affiliated institute and admission year — the 2027 seat matrix isn't confirmed yet. Worth checking each year: B.Tech Marine Engineering, B.Tech Naval Architecture & Ocean Engineering, B.Sc Nautical Science, DNS, B.Sc Maritime Science where offered, and other notified programmes — and whether a seat is at an IMU campus or an affiliated institute, since counselling numbers can differ from the initial sanctioned intake.
Campuses
IMU's own campuses are in Chennai, Mumbai (Port campus), Kolkata, Visakhapatnam and Kochi, alongside a number of affiliated institutes. It's worth checking the current approved-institute list and programme-wise intake before shortlisting colleges.

How to prepare
- Revise NCERT Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, with real time on numerical problems
- Build English and aptitude alongside the sciences — comprehension, grammar, reasoning and quantitative practice
- Work through official model question papers to get used to the question style
- Take timed mock tests at the actual exam duration
- Research medical fitness and eyesight standards for seafaring programmes before choosing a course
Common questions
What's the eligibility for IMU CET 2027?
It depends on the programme. Popular undergraduate marine programmes generally need 10+2 with PCM, a minimum aggregate and an English requirement — check the 2027 prospectus for the exact figures.
Is there one age limit for every programme?
No — age criteria and relaxations depend on the course and the reference date set in that year's prospectus.
How many times can I attempt IMU CET?
There's generally no fixed lifetime cap. You can apply in different admission cycles as long as you meet that year's eligibility conditions.
Is IMU CET online or offline?
In recent cycles it has run as an online, computer-based test for courses other than BBA. Confirm the mode in the 2027 notification.
Is IMU CET compulsory for admission?
It's the main entrance route for several programmes, including B.Sc Nautical Science and DNS, though mechanisms differ for some programmes and categories — check the relevant admission rules.
Preparing alongside boards or JEE?
Jupiter Academy's Class 11 & 12 Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics coaching builds exactly the foundation IMU CET draws on. If a student is weighing it alongside board exams or JEE, our faculty can fold IMU CET practice into their existing revision at either Chennai campus. Our own 2026–27 prospectus has the full course and fee details — separate from IMU's own CET prospectus, which isn't out yet.
