IOQM Syllabus

IOQM Syllabus — Key Topics
Covered Every Year

IOQM covers advanced mathematics across four major areas. Mastery of these topics, practised through previous year papers, is the key to qualifying.

📐 Algebra

  • Polynomials and algebraic identities
  • Arithmetic and geometric progressions
  • Inequalities (AM-GM, Cauchy-Schwarz)
  • Functional equations
  • Complex numbers and quadratics
  • Systems of equations and Vieta's formulas

🔢 Number Theory

  • Divisibility and prime factorisation
  • LCM, GCD and Bezout's theorem
  • Modular arithmetic and congruences
  • Diophantine equations
  • Chinese Remainder Theorem
  • Fermat's Little Theorem and Euler's theorem

📏 Geometry

  • Triangles, quadrilaterals, circles
  • Similarity, congruence, area proofs
  • Trigonometric identities and applications
  • Coordinate geometry
  • Ceva's and Menelaus' theorem
  • Ptolemy's theorem and power of a point

🎲 Combinatorics

  • Counting principles (addition, multiplication)
  • Permutations and combinations
  • Binomial theorem and Pascal's triangle
  • Pigeonhole principle
  • Graph theory basics
  • Inclusion-exclusion principle
How to Prepare

How to Use IOQM Previous Year Papers
for Maximum Preparation Benefit

Solving previous year IOQM question papers is the single most effective strategy for IOQM preparation. Here's how to do it right.

1

Start with 2020 — Work Forward to 2024–25

Begin with older papers (2020) to build comfort, then progress to recent papers (2024–25). This lets you track how the difficulty and question style evolved year by year.

2

Attempt Under Strict 3-Hour Time Limit

Always simulate exam conditions — set a timer for exactly 3 hours, avoid calculators and phones. IOQM rewards time management as much as problem-solving ability.

3

Analyse Every Wrong Answer Deeply

For each incorrect answer, identify the exact concept gap — don't just learn the solution. Re-derive the approach from scratch to build genuine understanding, not answer memorisation.

4

Track Your Score Progress Across Years

Maintain a score log: date, year of paper, total score, breakdown by Algebra/NT/Geometry/Combinatorics. Track your weak topics systematically and prioritise revision accordingly.

5

Focus Heavily on Number Theory

IOQM papers consistently feature strong Number Theory weightage. Master divisibility, congruences, modular arithmetic and Diophantine equations — these are high-return investment areas.

6

Pair with Standard Reference Books

Use Titu Andreescu's books, Arthur Engel's Problem Solving Strategies, and HBCSE's olympiad resources alongside previous year papers. The combination builds both technique and pattern recognition.

About IOQM

Everything students and parents need to know about the Indian Olympiad Qualifier in Mathematics.

IOQM — Indian Olympiad Qualifier in Mathematics — is the first stage of India's Mathematical Olympiad Program. It is conducted by HBCSE (Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education), Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, in September every year. It is organised in collaboration with MTAI (Mathematics Teachers Association of India).

Any student studying in Class 8, 9, 10, 11 or 12 in India is eligible, provided they are below 19 years of age as of 1st August of the academic year. Students from Class 8, 9 and 10 are especially encouraged to start early to build experience and qualify in later years with stronger preparation.

IOQM (Indian Olympiad Qualifier in Mathematics) is a government program conducted by HBCSE and is the gateway to representing India at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) — the world's most prestigious math competition. The SOF IMO (International Mathematics Olympiad) is a separate private Olympiad for school students. IOQM is significantly more challenging and prestigious than private Olympiads like SOF IMO.

IOQM is a 3-hour offline pen-and-paper exam. It has 30 questions — all integer type with answers ranging from 00 to 99. There is no negative marking. Questions carry 2, 3 or 5 marks each. The maximum total is 102 marks. Topics covered are Algebra, Number Theory, Geometry and Combinatorics.

Registration for IOQM opens in July–August every year. Students can register through their school (if the school is registered with MTAI) or through their regional centre directly. Check the official HBCSE website (hbcse.tifr.res.in) and MTAI website for current registration details. Contact Jupiter Academy for guidance on registration.

Students who clear IOQM qualify for RMO (Regional Mathematical Olympiad) held in November. RMO qualifiers advance to INMO (Indian National Mathematical Olympiad) in January. INMO qualifiers attend IMOTC (International Mathematical Olympiad Training Camp) in May and top performers represent India at IMO (International Mathematical Olympiad) in July.

Previous year papers are essential but not sufficient alone. They build familiarity with the question style and level. You also need to study advanced topics from standard Olympiad textbooks (Arthur Engel, Titu Andreescu, Posamentier), practice additional problems from AIME, USAMO, and previous IMO shortlists. Expert coaching from Jupiter Academy can significantly accelerate your preparation and provide structured guidance.
